The time has come……

endorphin May 25th, 2009

Sometime in March, after a scare of being stuck right in the middle of a flash flood, I sat down to take stock. An analysis of time utilization shows that approximately 25-30% of my awake time is spent, preparing for classes, driving to & fro classes, doing classes, attending workshops & tuitions, learning new chory & etc.

What if half of this time were to spend on my work, how much more can I produce & achieve ? I thought to myself. Does the reward & return justify the time spent ? ….a long list of questions ran through my mind. I found myself revisiting the objectives of doing RPM.

My venture with RPM started a little over 3 years ago. It has been a very rewarding one I must say. It has exposed me to the world of cycling, learn much knowledge about the sports and still much more to learn, met & made many precious friends in the fitness industry, indoor & outdoor, improved my fitness to a level I would never thought of, involve in fitness & the sports of cycling that I would never ever thought I would have. I love every dynamic of it. I enjoyed every class and every promotion, from a newbie covering classes to taking permanent classes to the priviledge of take over season instructors’ class such as lyn, learning to build class numbers, got certified, involved in launches, having full class after full class, cleared to do RPMC………awesome journey.

And now, as I look at the analysis, evaluated objectives & investments, it looks like things has to be reprioritise & reorganize to align to the goals & objectives set.  There is only 24hrs a day. I can only include & do so much. What are the key goals & objetcives ?

To cut the long story short, it looks like the time has come to retire from teaching RPM, at the very least temporarily retire.

A thorough discussion with the respective HTs & GXMs to smoothly handover the classes so that members will be least affected possible. The 1st class to go was MJH Thurs 6.45pm which is now taken over by Herny. 2nd to go was TF Fri Back to Back. It was reduced to one class at 7.30pm, alternate by Jane & Pat. 2 months down, May 26, my last rpmc at Maxis. It will be taken over by Wes from June onwards. May 27, my last rpm at Maxis. It will be taken over by Mandy. It certainly felt heavy hearted. To answer your question, Zebets, yes, I will most certainly miss teaching the classes dearly. Everyone will be missed for sure.

Thanks to all the support of all the rpm members. Thanks for your love for the rides. Keep it up !!! Thanks for the well wishes. I can’t promised that this is gonna temporal and that I will return. I probably can come back to team teach once in a while, if situation permits. For now, WOD will focus on keeping & improving the fitness level for outdoor rides. Central focus will be work productivity & delivery & finally get on with my personal learning which I have long procrastinated.

Do keep in touch RPMers. :) You can always reach me here from this space :) For now, Live Strong Ride Hard :)

PS : There will some RPM / Cycling / Les Mills stuff which I will put up for sales. Watch this space.

Interstates 09

endorphin May 22nd, 2009

Yes yes yes, it has been 3 weeks now after IS 09. So here you go……..:)

As usual, the excitement of interstates 09 started when interstates 08 ended. Familiar members of PCC was already looking at the calender & anticipating a change of timing as fasting mth falls in Aug.

Sure enough, rumour was out when the ride leaders went receeing the route sometime in Feb/March. Everyone sat tight in anticipation for the annoucement of registration. And yes, it came in March. Then it was the rush of booking a spot. Less than 3 weeks, it was done, fully book.

PCC Sun rides started to build the mileage and simulate the ride. It was getting more and more interesting each Sun. Then disappointingly, came my crash. It was very frustrating at first but once I accept the fact & change the approach, it became a much anticipated holiday especially with all the speculation of how the route will be.

There were talks about the 1st day climb will be as steep as Bukit Hantu, a 10% and followed by big time rollings, similar to the route to PD/Lukut.

Finally, a week before, the briefing.

Collected the ID tag, bike tag, tulips, t/shirts, sticker…etc, it was time to pack !!

Everyone clear their timetable, getting ready to travel down to Seremban. A car load full of travelling light except the crocodile in the middle who has 3 bags for the trip, size L, M & S  :)  Paris Hilton going on a biking trip…..Oppsies……wakakakakak  :p

It was crazy jam on the way to Seremban. It took a good 2 hours to make it to Allson Klana !! We quickly settled in, prepared for the next  day stuff & retired.

I drove support car for Bahri & Clarence. LK used my bike to conquer the much talk about killer climb. It was a much anticipated climb. LK had quite a fair of hiccups in familiarising with the bike initially and she ended up dead last with MTB Adrian. MT & I kept check on her but she caught up by the time we reach the killer. Power.

It turns out, the climb was a good 14% over 2km distance with absolutely no chance (taper) to take breather. KILLER !! It’s so steep that majority of the cyclists pushed bike. That includes even some season strong riders. But all make it through safely.

fooh…female power…

All different strategies to take the climb…the straight up, the snaky, the push bike…whichever strategy, still reach the top :p

When it comes to a wall of 14% climb, where semi pro is also of the opinion that it is harder then Genting, fitness is relative…….ego becomes the games & enemy..;)

If these do not convince you of how tough it is, lets check the elevation !!!.

The ride leader has strongly strongly emphasized the need of safety & the target of zero casualty from April 28 briefing itself. Unfortunatetly, there’s a little drama after the 60km pit stop. AC fell and had a small but deep wound that needed medical attention. Excellent support work from MT to send her from seremban to Segamat, made 3 hospital/clinic stops, 4 stitches & big bunch of pain killers, anti-inflamatory & antibiotics,….all were good. Phew….

Day 2 Interstates 09

It was my goal to ride at least 1.5 days in this IS. If all go well, I will push it to complete 2 days. So, Day 2 is in fact my day 1. Was I a little nervous ? Of course! This was my first ride after the crash. Can I still balance on the bike ? hmm…:) I hardly have any chance to build any mileage in my legs.

We woke up early @ 5.45am, down for breakie @ 6.15am. and by 6.30am, we were all down infront of the hotel, preping our bikes.

n661669699_1625935_7146125.jpgn661669699_1625938_1775042.jpg

2nd day saw us through the most rolling hills ride through the estate into Gunung Ledang. I was fortunate to catch Azahar & PK’s peloton. Knowing I have no mileage on my legs, just recovered from crash injury, it was very nice of them to promise me a ride to the destination. We had an early refill and made our way to the critical juction into the estate. It was nice to ride under the canopy of trees but it was unrelenting rollings. It sucked the energy out of the cyclists, physically & mentally.

n817703129_1633642_5448476.jpg

By the time we exited the estate, 2 of our members, Jeff & Wong CC, were suffering big time. Apparently, both of them had upset tummy and wong has bonked. There were so many waiting pit stops that even newbie AC catch up with the help of Azahar & PK pushing her up the rolling hills. By the time we were left with 8km to go, Wong CC given up & call for support car despite we coaxing him, reasoning with him what if there’s no more rolling ahead. But it was just too much for him. So, he stayed to wait for Dennis to pick him up and we moved on. True enough, it was only one more climb and flat all the way like Ijok to Gunung Ledang Resort. :)

But the highlight of day 2 wasn’t over yet. When Clarence & Bahri have the priviledge of being roomie with #1, it was a comedy court from 3pm at the cafetaria till past 10pm. Hillarious !

Day 3 Interstates 09

Day 3 was the shortest in distance, 103km. The ride started a little later then usual. Everyone was more laid back & chill. Chin Hoe who had 2 days of food poisoning finally recovered & got to ride on the 3rd day. Yay. Our peloton started from behind. We cruised & overtook quite a number of groups, riding into the kampong of Malacca.

copy-of-n817703129_1633728_2873409.jpg

As we were having a good ime, suddenly, all of us saw from a far, #1 was talking to some kampong people in front of their house. Upon seeing us, he was trying to get on to his bike. PK shouted, “big chainring, big chainring !!”. Peloton speed shot up to 38kmh all of a sudden. We pulled for quite a good distance. As we slow & LOLs, Clarence signalled # 2 ! #2 ! And the speed went up again. :) Crazy sprint sessions.

The farnie part was, unknown to us, LK was chasing hard to hop on to the train on her 15 yr old steel bike from behind. She couldn’t understand how come the peloton sped away from her all of a sudden. :)  :)

 2914_77739110884_742305884_1818386_6607179_n.jpg

Thank goodness, there was a pitstop for refill & reload at about 50ish km. After refill, the peloton hang between 25-28kmh into Malacca.

The hotel was not ready for checking when we arrived, so we did the most obvious thing - EAT !! Cendol, laksa, rojak……Results ? most of us kena food poisoning…..:D  :D

Hydroxycut Recall Due to Liver Injuries

FDA Says People Should Stop Using the Diet Products Immediately

May 1, 2009 — Fourteen Hydroxycut products, marketed as fat burners, low-cost diet aids, and energy enhancers, are being recalled voluntarily by the manufacturer after the FDA received 23 reports of serious liver injuries ranging from jaundice to death.

The FDA announced the recall today at a news conference.

The recalled products include:

  • Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
  • Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
  • Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
  • Hydroxycut 24
  • Hydroxycut Carb Control
  • Hydroxycut Natural

Hydroxycut and Liver Problems

At the news conference, Linda Katz, MD, interim chief medical officer of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, said the agency urges consumers to discontinue use of the Hydroxycut products. Not affected by the recall are Hydroxycut Cleanse and Hoodia products.

The 23 reports of adverse effects include liver damage, elevated liver enzymes (which indicates potential liver damage) and liver damage requiring a transplant. A 19-year-old man died after using Hydroxycut. “The death occurred in 2007,” Katz says, “and was reported to the agency at the end of March 2009.”

“Hydroxycut products contain a variety of ingredients and herbal extracts,” Katz said. The FDA has not yet determined which ingredients or doses are associated with the liver problems, according to Katz.

Other reported health problems include cardiovascular problems, seizures, and serious muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis) that can cause kidney failure.

Hydroxycut Recall: Industry Response

A message on the toll-free number of Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc. lists the recalled products. Jamie Moss, a spokesperson for the company, says the company is issuing a statement.

The statement also says that the company conducts internal analyses of individual ingredients and medical, scientific and toxicological literature reviews on the safety of product ingredients.

On its web site, the company has posted a statement along with answers to common questions. In part, it says: “While this is a small number of reports relative to the many millions of people who have used Hydroxycut products over the years, out of an abundance of caution and because consumer safety is our top priority, we are voluntarily recalling these Hydroxycut-branded products.”

The reports of liver problems and other ill effects associated with the product use don’t prove cause and effect, says John Hathcock, PhD, vice president of scientific and international affairs for the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association for the dietary supplement industry.

“Right now it’s a simple association,” he tells WebMD. Only further investigation will determine if the association is a random occurrence or not, he says.

Tod Cooperman, MD, president of ConsumerLab.com, an independent organization that evaluates dietary supplements, has been testing Hydroxycut products. He hasn’t issued a report on them yet.

Cooperman agrees it’s difficult to pinpoint which ingredients are to blame. “The products contain many ingredients,” he says.

The FDA advises consumers who have any of the products involved in the recall to discontinue use immediately and return them to the place of purchase. Though not all the recalled products have been linked with serious liver-related adverse reactions, the company agreed to recall the 14 products, according to the FDA
